Why this Matters

The problem: Oregon has chronically underfunded wildlife conservation and habitat restoration. The updated State Wildlife Action Plan now identifies over 300 at-risk species—a sharp increase showing escalating threats to our wildlife. Each year, the legislature allocates general funds elsewhere, leaving wildlife protection underfunded. With the Trump Administration cutting federal conservation programs, the funding crisis has intensified.

The solution: 1% for Wildlife, legislation planned for the 2026 session, would create stable, ongoing funding for wildlife habitat protection and species recovery. Raising Oregon's tourism tax from 1.5% to 2.75% would provide dedicated resources to protect threatened wildlife and fish, preserve critical habitats, and strengthen ecosystems against biodiversity loss and climate change.

Dear Governor Kotek,
I write to thank you for supporting HB 4134, 1.25 % of Wildlife, and ask you to prioritize signing it into law, to ensure that the ODFW and other wildlife and habitat conservation plans have the necessary resources to safeguard and recover our state’s most imperiled wildlife and fish species and their habitats. 

Oregon’s wildlife and their habitat are one of Oregon’s greatest treasures - drawing tourists to visit our state and beloved by those of us who are lucky enough to call Oregon home.

Our State Wildlife Action Plan now identifies over 300 species as being at risk. Between state funding shortfalls and Trump administration attacks on the laws and programs safeguarding wildlife and withdrawal of federal funds, we are not adequately funding conservation. Thankfully, the solution has passed in the legislature: 1% for Wildlife. 

And as soon as it becomes law, we can begin to ensure long-term dedicated funding for our most imperiled wildlife and fish species, safeguard essential habitats, and improve ecosystem resiliency in the face of the twin biodiversity and climate crises. 

Thank you for prioritizing 1% for Wildlife and ensuring Oregon’s natural legacy is safeguarded for generations to come.
