“We must cultivate our garden” —Voltaire, Candide, 1759
What Voltaire wrote over 250 years ago couldn’t be more true today. Amidst the distractions of networking and all the messages shouted at us by the media, our earth is needing our full attention more than ever. Besides being involved in the environmental activism that ECC brings to everyone, how can you satisfy that urge to cultivate?
Here’s a short list to give everyone some ideas:
- Help with Midcoast Watersheds restoration and nursery work
- If you don’t have a garden spot, see if your community sponsors a community garden you might find a spot in or help with (ECC is sponsoring a Yachats curbside garden we can use help with! More information in our next newsletter.)
- Even without your own garden plot, growing a small tub of herbs for you or your cat can be fun to try
- Help eradicate invasive plants that damage ecosystem balance, like english ivy
- Volunteer to help others with their gardens (a couple of our ECC members could really use help, for example!)
If you are interested in helping with a plant swap at one of our monthly ECC meetings, please contact Liz at keokuk@casco.net.
