Get LOUD to Protect National Forests!

A Change.org petition asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to leave the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule alone. It was started on May 13, 2026 by journalist and photographer Bethany Salvon, and it is addressed to Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and to USFWS Director Brian Nesvik.

It asks for three things: protect the Roadless Rule from rollback, keep wildlife habitat safe from road building, logging and fragmentation, and keep science rather than short-term industrial pressure at the center of how national forests are managed.

The petition counts 59 million acres across 39 states, which is the figure from when the rule was written in 2001. The Forest Service says the rule applies to nearly 45 million acres today. Either way, close to 2 million of those acres are in Oregon, and the Sierra Club's Oregon chapter counts more than 13,000 acres around Mount Hebo in the Siuslaw National Forest that the Roadless Rule protects and nothing else does.

This petition started before the Forest Service opened its formal comment period, and it runs alongside that process rather than replacing it. Signing a petition is not the same as filing a public comment, and the agency is only obliged to respond to comments filed in its rulemaking docket.
