Why this Matters
The Bureau of Land Management wants to offer 132 oil and gas parcels, 287,284 acres in Mohave County, Arizona, for lease over two sales, one in December 2026 and one in February 2027. It would be the first Arizona lease sale since 2018. The parcels sit in northern Arizona near the Utah border, in four clusters, some within a mile of Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument and about 12 miles from Grand Canyon National Park. BLM's own announcement acknowledges minimal oil and gas resources in the area.
The public comment period closes September 9. That is six days out from when this was drafted, so this is a short window, not a typo.
A lease sale is the first step, not the last. A company that wins a lease still has to apply for a permit to drill, and that application gets its own environmental review and its own public comment opportunity. Commenting now shapes which parcels move forward and what conditions attach to them.
