Why this Matters
Oregon Wild is running a free Wild Wednesday webcast on Wednesday, September 16 at 6 p.m. Pacific, walking people through how to write and submit a public comment defending the Roadless Rule. Their staff do the whole thing live: what is at stake, what the administration is actually proposing, how it lands on Oregon's wildlife and wild places, and then the mechanics of getting a comment filed.
Their framing is the useful part: you do not have to be an expert to weigh in. That is the single most common reason people skip a comment period, and it is the thing an hour with Oregon Wild staff fixes.
One correction to carry with you. Their event page says the deadline is September 21, which was true when they wrote it. The Forest Service extended the comment period on September 11 and it now closes Tuesday, October 6 at 8:59 p.m. Pacific. So you have nearly three weeks after the webcast to file what you draft, not five days.
Oregon Wild is also where several of the numbers on our Roadless page come from, including the finding that 91 percent of Oregon's roadless forest sits inside municipal watersheds serving roughly 800,000 people.
Steps to Take
Register on the Oregon Wild event page. The registration form is on that page, below the description. It is free.
The raffle is optional and separate. They are raffling a copy of Oregon's Ancient Forests: A Hiking Guide and one of their t-shirts, at five dollars a ticket, which supports the Wednesday webcast series and their wildlands work. Buying a ticket is not required to attend and nothing about the webcast depends on it.
Come with a place in mind. The session goes better if you already know which roadless area you want to write about. Mount Hebo in the Siuslaw, the Oregon Dunes, a creek you fish, a trail you walk. Then actually file it. A draft that stays in your notes app is not a comment. The window closes Tuesday, October 6 at 8:59 p.m. Pacific, and the comment form opens straight to the writing box.
There is a second one the next evening if this night does not work. The Sierra Club runs a similar session on Thursday, September 17, also at 6 p.m. Pacific, with speakers from the Pacific Northwest Forest Climate Alliance and Save Our Wild Salmon.
