This month’s activity: Sgraffito Pottery Workshop

Have you ever wanted to carve your own pottery? This month, Liz Fox and Beth Kattleman will guide us through the art of sgraffito, an Italian word meaning “to scratch,” a centuries-old pottery decorating technique that produces stunning results through a surprisingly meditative process.

Sgraffito works by applying a layer of colored slip to leather-hard clay, then carefully scratching away parts of that layer to reveal the clay beneath, creating contrasting images, patterns, and texture. In this workshop, we’ll be carving through black slip to reveal the white clay underneath, so your carved lines will glow against a dark background.

Liz and Beth will provide everything you need: a coated clay platter, all tools, and a selection of designs to choose from. You’re also welcome to bring your own design. Just keep it no larger than 5″ x 8″ and simple in outline (think coloring book style or a simple oval mandala). After the session, they’ll take your platter, fire it twice (with a clear glaze applied before the final firing), and bring it back for you to pick up at our next gathering on April 9.

There’s no charge for the class, but donations to help offset costs are warmly welcomed, and you can make one right at checkout.

Space is limited to 20 participants. A free ticket is required to attend. Drop-ins cannot be accommodated.

My desire to connect and communicate drives my art and the concern I feel for our planet draws me to be part of the Emerald Curtain Collective. I enjoy sculpting masks of key species that help educate others about our unique ecosystems.

I’ve lived on the Oregon coast for most of my life and navigated a sea of careers since graduating with a Soil Science degree from OSU in 1980. Retiring as a high school librarian in 2020, I’ve been a full-time artist ever since, diving into the riptide I’ve waded in for over 40 years. My marine biologist husband, Dave and I have 2 amazing children, 3 unruly dogs, and live on a swamp between Newport and Toledo.
