SUMMARY:April 9 - Emerald Curtain Collective Monthly Gathering
DESCRIPTION:This month’s activity: Felted Mushrooms & Critters\n\n\n\nNeedle felting is a fiber art where a barbed needle is used to sculpt soft wool into shapes one poke at a time. As the needle repeatedly enters the wool\, its tiny barbs tangle the fibers together allowing you to build and sculpt soft forms. In this class we will be creating mushrooms\, snails\, and gnomes that can be added to a plant\, a piece of wood\, a pin for your hat\, or anywhere a little whimsy is needed. \n\n\n\nThere’s no charge for the class\, but donations to help offset costs are warmly welcomed\, and you can make one right at checkout. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited to 20 participants. A free ticket is required to attend. Drop-ins cannot be accommodated. \n\n\n\nThis month’s host:\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Laura Buchanan\n\n \nLaura is a gardener and a dried floristry artist; trying to capture the fleeting natural beauty of flowers for a moment longer. Gathering flowers at the peak of their glow\, as well as after the petals fall–and the seed heads and pods’ beauty of texture emerge. Then drying them into their second life where color softens\, petals curl and stems twist. \n\n\n\nShe also adds to her work elements crafted from wool\, felt and paper. Celebrating the softness\, texture and imperfect charm of organic materials. A world where nothing wilts\, it simply transforms– allowing nature’s impermanence a moment longer.

SUMMARY:Emerald Curtain Collective Monthly Gathering
DESCRIPTION:This month’s activity: Sgraffito Pottery Workshop\n\n\n\nHave you ever wanted to carve your own pottery? This month\, Liz Fox and Beth Kattleman will guide us through the art of sgraffito\, an Italian word meaning “to scratch\,” a centuries-old pottery decorating technique that produces stunning results through a surprisingly meditative process. \n\n\n\nSgraffito works by applying a layer of colored slip to leather-hard clay\, then carefully scratching away parts of that layer to reveal the clay beneath\, creating contrasting images\, patterns\, and texture. In this workshop\, we’ll be carving through black slip to reveal the white clay underneath\, so your carved lines will glow against a dark background. \n\n\n\nLiz and Beth will provide everything you need: a coated clay platter\, all tools\, and a selection of designs to choose from. You’re also welcome to bring your own design. Just keep it no larger than 5″ x 8″ and simple in outline (think coloring book style or a simple oval mandala). After the session\, they’ll take your platter\, fire it twice (with a clear glaze applied before the final firing)\, and bring it back for you to pick up at our next gathering on April 9. \n\n\n\nThere’s no charge for the class\, but donations to help offset costs are warmly welcomed\, and you can make one right at checkout. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited to 20 participants. A free ticket is required to attend. Drop-ins cannot be accommodated. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis month’s hosts:\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Beth Kattleman\n\n \nBeth is a ceramic and mixed-media artist. \n\n\n\n \n\n \n \n \n Instagram \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Liz Fox\n\n \nMy desire to connect and communicate drives my art and the concern I feel for our planet draws me to be part of the Emerald Curtain Collective. I enjoy sculpting masks of key species that help educate others about our unique ecosystems. \n\n\n\nI’ve lived on the Oregon coast for most of my life and navigated a sea of careers since graduating with a Soil Science degree from OSU in 1980. Retiring as a high school librarian in 2020\, I’ve been a full-time artist ever since\, diving into the riptide I’ve waded in for over 40 years. My marine biologist husband\, Dave and I have 2 amazing children\, 3 unruly dogs\, and live on a swamp between Newport and Toledo. \n\n \n \n \n ECC Blog Posts

SUMMARY:Emerald Curtain Collective Monthly Gathering
DESCRIPTION:This month’s activity: Prayer Flags Workshop\nIf you were to send out a prayer or wish for the world\, what would it look like? \nThis month\, Willow will lead the group in bringing thought to physical form and action- through creating both a collective prayer flag\, and our own individual sets -for welcoming in the near year with intention. Prayer flags are a beautiful tradition of sending intentions\, blessings\, and prayers out to the universe\, as the wind carries them from the fabric into the ethers. As we evoke them from the heart and mind\, we weave and infuse our prayers into the fabric as we work- through the words and symbols that emerge. \nWillow will share information on what makes this year so unique and important\, with numerology and lunar astrology considerations for setting intentions for 2026\, year of the Fire Horse. \nWe’ll be working with hand-dyed\, up-cycled cotton squares that our volunteers have created from donated materials to craft both a community flag that will be joined together with others’ on a shared string\, “come together in one accord\, and hang them on one cord\, together” as well as a personal set to take home. During our two-hour workshop\, you’ll complete a single community flag and then begin work on your own set; participants are welcome to finish personal flags at home and add prayers\, details and embellishment as inspiration strikes. No pressure to finish everything in one night. 🙂 \nSpace and supplies are limited\, so we’ll need an accurate headcount to prepare kits for everyone. \nRSVP is required before Feb 8th. \nThen\, keep your eyes out for symbols\, designs\, or sayings that would embody your thoughts or feelings- and we look forward to creating with you!

Low Road (South Beaver Creek area) and enjoy and evening of food\, crafts\, and community. We will provide insect hotel wood frame kits to be assembled and filled with nature’s treasures for insect to take refuge in. \nWhat to bring (all are optional):\n\na dish to share (please label ingredients)\nnatural materials for insect hotels: bamboo\, pinecones\, twigs\, hollow stems\, etc. (you are also welcome to scavenge for materials on the land once you arrive)\nblanket or warm clothing (just in case it gets cool at night)\ninstruments to play around the fire\n\nComing from further away and need to camp? Please email us ahead of time to make arrangements. \nThis is a come-as-you-are\, no-pressure event to foster community building – no experience needed\, you can choose your own level of participation\, & drop-ins are welcome. \nWhat we are making:\nInsect hotels provide essential shelter for native pollinators and beneficial bugs like solitary bees\, ladybugs\, and lacewings—many of whom are losing habitat due to development and pesticide use. These handmade structures give insects a safe place to nest\, overwinter\, and lay eggs\, helping restore balance in our local ecosystems. \nAt this event\, we’ll be building our own insect hotels from scratch using simple wooden kits provided by ECC. Each hotel will be filled with natural materials that mimic the nooks and crannies insects love. \nPlease bring a paper grocery bag filled with foraged or upcycled materials to share: hollow stems\, pinecones\, dry grasses\, bark\, twigs\, bamboo\, seed pods\, moss\, straw\, or wood shavings. \nWe’ll have tools\, extra supplies\, and guidance on hand.

Whether you’re an artist\, activist\, forest-lover\, or just curious about what we do\, this is a chance to get rooted in the work. \n\n\n\nWe’re hosting a casual meet & greet\, paired with some hands-on art-making for our next production in June for World Ocean Day\, as well as preparing parade puppets for events in May. We hope to have our volunteers’ artistic contributions on display at the Newport Visual Arts Center during Bloom Newport\, and you can sign up to help use them for our upcoming events! In addition\, for those interested in our current call to actions and activism\, we will have information about public comment writing for the Oregon State Forest Annual timber Operational Plan (AOP). \n\n\n\nExpect laughter\, inspiration\, and for sure a little glue and paint on your fingers. Come grow with us. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome. No experience necessary and no need to bring anything except a passion for art and our environment!
