SUMMARY:Emerald Curtain Collective Monthly Gathering
DESCRIPTION:This month’s activity: Prayer Flags Workshop\nIf you were to send out a prayer or wish for the world\, what would it look like? \nThis month\, Willow will lead the group in bringing thought to physical form and action- through creating both a collective prayer flag\, and our own individual sets -for welcoming in the near year with intention. Prayer flags are a beautiful tradition of sending intentions\, blessings\, and prayers out to the universe\, as the wind carries them from the fabric into the ethers. As we evoke them from the heart and mind\, we weave and infuse our prayers into the fabric as we work- through the words and symbols that emerge. \nWillow will share information on what makes this year so unique and important\, with numerology and lunar astrology considerations for setting intentions for 2026\, year of the Fire Horse. \nWe’ll be working with hand-dyed\, up-cycled cotton squares that our volunteers have created from donated materials to craft both a community flag that will be joined together with others’ on a shared string\, “come together in one accord\, and hang them on one cord\, together” as well as a personal set to take home. During our two-hour workshop\, you’ll complete a single community flag and then begin work on your own set; participants are welcome to finish personal flags at home and add prayers\, details and embellishment as inspiration strikes. No pressure to finish everything in one night. 🙂 \nSpace and supplies are limited\, so we’ll need an accurate headcount to prepare kits for everyone. \nRSVP is required before Feb 8th. \nThen\, keep your eyes out for symbols\, designs\, or sayings that would embody your thoughts or feelings- and we look forward to creating with you!

SUMMARY:Emerald Curtain Collective Monthly Gathering
DESCRIPTION:This month’s activity: Sgraffito Pottery Workshop\n\n\n\nHave you ever wanted to carve your own pottery? This month\, Liz Fox and Beth Kattleman will guide us through the art of sgraffito\, an Italian word meaning “to scratch\,” a centuries-old pottery decorating technique that produces stunning results through a surprisingly meditative process. \n\n\n\nSgraffito works by applying a layer of colored slip to leather-hard clay\, then carefully scratching away parts of that layer to reveal the clay beneath\, creating contrasting images\, patterns\, and texture. In this workshop\, we’ll be carving through black slip to reveal the white clay underneath\, so your carved lines will glow against a dark background. \n\n\n\nLiz and Beth will provide everything you need: a coated clay platter\, all tools\, and a selection of designs to choose from. You’re also welcome to bring your own design. Just keep it no larger than 5″ x 8″ and simple in outline (think coloring book style or a simple oval mandala). After the session\, they’ll take your platter\, fire it twice (with a clear glaze applied before the final firing)\, and bring it back for you to pick up at our next gathering on April 9. \n\n\n\nThere’s no charge for the class\, but donations to help offset costs are warmly welcomed\, and you can make one right at checkout. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited to 20 participants. A free ticket is required to attend. Drop-ins cannot be accommodated. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis month’s hosts:\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Beth Kattleman\n\n \nBeth is a ceramic and mixed-media artist. \n\n\n\n \n\n \n \n \n Instagram \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Liz Fox\n\n \nMy desire to connect and communicate drives my art and the concern I feel for our planet draws me to be part of the Emerald Curtain Collective. I enjoy sculpting masks of key species that help educate others about our unique ecosystems. \n\n\n\nI’ve lived on the Oregon coast for most of my life and navigated a sea of careers since graduating with a Soil Science degree from OSU in 1980. Retiring as a high school librarian in 2020\, I’ve been a full-time artist ever since\, diving into the riptide I’ve waded in for over 40 years. My marine biologist husband\, Dave and I have 2 amazing children\, 3 unruly dogs\, and live on a swamp between Newport and Toledo. \n\n \n \n \n ECC Blog Posts

SUMMARY:April 9 - Emerald Curtain Collective Monthly Gathering
DESCRIPTION:This month’s activity: Felted Mushrooms & Critters\n\n\n\nNeedle felting is a fiber art where a barbed needle is used to sculpt soft wool into shapes one poke at a time. As the needle repeatedly enters the wool\, its tiny barbs tangle the fibers together allowing you to build and sculpt soft forms. In this class we will be creating mushrooms\, snails\, and gnomes that can be added to a plant\, a piece of wood\, a pin for your hat\, or anywhere a little whimsy is needed. \n\n\n\nThere’s no charge for the class\, but donations to help offset costs are warmly welcomed\, and you can make one right at checkout. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited to 20 participants. A free ticket is required to attend. Drop-ins cannot be accommodated. \n\n\n\nThis month’s host:\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Laura Buchanan\n\n \nLaura is a gardener and a dried floristry artist; trying to capture the fleeting natural beauty of flowers for a moment longer. Gathering flowers at the peak of their glow\, as well as after the petals fall–and the seed heads and pods’ beauty of texture emerge. Then drying them into their second life where color softens\, petals curl and stems twist. \n\n\n\nShe also adds to her work elements crafted from wool\, felt and paper. Celebrating the softness\, texture and imperfect charm of organic materials. A world where nothing wilts\, it simply transforms– allowing nature’s impermanence a moment longer.

SUMMARY:May 14 - Emerald Curtain Collective Monthly Gathering
DESCRIPTION:This month’s activity: Documentary Screening + Puppet & Mask Display \n\n\n\nWe Are Here is a one-hour documentary about the Paperhand Puppet Intervention\, a community-rooted puppet theater company based in North Carolina. The film follows the company through its 20th season and takes a close look at the people\, the process\, and the intention behind making large-scale art that moves audiences toward action. It’s funny\, it’s earnest\, and it asks some good questions about what it means to make something together. Learn more about the film. \n\n\n\nWe’ll screen the film and then open up for a Q&A and puppet demo. \n\n\n\nWe’ll also have some of ECC’s handmade puppets and masks on hand to look at and handle. If you’ve ever been curious about how these things get made\, or if you’d like to get involved in building future nature-themed puppet shows and community events\, this is a good night to show up. No experience required. Just bring your curiosity. \n\n\n\nBring your favorite movie snack\, and a comfy chair or blanket if you’d like to sit on the floor. \n\n\n\nAs always\, the gathering is free and open to all. Donations are greatly appreciated. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited. A free ticket is required to attend. \n\n\n\nPlay

SUMMARY:2026 ECC Wildkin Festival
DESCRIPTION:A Celebration of Crafting\, Community\, and Handmade Resistance \n\n\n\nThe Oregon Coast is not a postcard. It is a living\, breathing place where old-growth forests\, coastal estuaries\, salmon runs\, and the quiet rhythms of tide and fog hold each other up in ways most people never get to see. That web is under constant pressure. Clearcuts creep closer to the shoreline. Aerial herbicide spraying drifts into watersheds. Plastics wash in with every swell. Development fragments habitat that keystone species depend on. The threats do not arrive one at a time and then leave. They arrive together\, and they keep coming. \n\n\n\nThe Wildkin Festival is our answer to that relentlessness. It is a day to step away from the feed\, put your hands into real materials\, and remember that this place is worth fighting for because it is worth loving first. We are gathering at Heart Barn on June 27th from noon to 6pm to craft\, eat\, learn\, and be in the same room together\, followed by a potluck and fireside chat for anyone who wants to keep the evening going under the stars. \n\n\n\nProtecting an ecosystem takes more than petitions and public comments\, though we will keep doing both. It takes a community that actually knows each other. It takes neighbors who have shared a meal\, stamped leaves onto fabric together\, shaped moss into something beautiful\, and laughed while creating a critter mask. Those tangible\, in-person connections are what carry us when the next timber sale gets announced\, the next spray plan hits the news\, or the next legislative session opens with bad bills on the docket. \n\n\n\nEvery pod at this festival is designed to be hands-on and welcoming\, whether you come for an hour or stay the whole day. You can sample sourdough and take home a starter\, make moss art inside frames with locally foraged materials\, dye fabric with plants and rubber mallets\, build your own Wildkin face mask inspired by our puppet creations\, or sit down with volunteers to learn how ECC and CRA are working to defend this coast. \n\n\n\nCome ready to make something. Come ready to meet people. The fights ahead are real\, and we are going to be much stronger if we walk into them already knowing who is standing beside us. \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring\n\n\n\n\nYour Ticket (Printed or Digital)\n\n\n\nWater Bottle (refreshments including water\, tea\, and coffee will be available)\n\n\n\nPotluck Dish – Optional (we do have fridge space\, but no oven)\n\n\n\nComfortable Layered Clothing\n\n\n\nComfortable Shoes (attendees are welcome to explore the beautiful creekside property)\n\n\n\nAny nature bits you would like to include in your artwork (we will have some on hand)\n\nleaves\n\n\n\nflowers\n\n\n\nmosses & lichens\n\n\n\ndried mushrooms\n\n\n\nget creative!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\n\n12pm – 1pm: Welcome & Instructions\n\n\n\n1pm – 2pm: Sourdough Appreciation\n\n\n\n2:30pm-4:00pm: Moss Art (Group Activity)\n\n\n\n12pm – 6pm: Nature Printing\n\n\n\n12pm – 6pm: Wildkin Mask Making\n\n\n\n12pm – 6pm: ECC Environmental Action\n\n\n\n6pm – 11pm: Potluck Dinner\, Land Exploring\, and Fireside Chat **\n\n\n\n\n**Weather Advisory: If it rains\, we will move all outdoor activities inside and for the after-event social\, we will have hula hoop dancing and blacklight pingpong. \n\n\n\nPOD 1: Sourdough Appreciation\n\n\n\nHost: Steven Trotter \n\n\n\nLocation: Main Room \n\n\n\nPull up a chair at the long table and get into sourdough the low-pressure way. Steven will have a spread of baked goodies to sample\, dehydrated starters to take home\, printed care instructions\, and a handful of tested recipes to get you going. Stay as long as you want\, ask every question you have been sitting on\, and leave with a living culture and enough confidence to actually care for and bake with it. \n\n\n\nPOD 2: Moss Art\n\n\n\nHost: Moss Webster \n\n\n\nLocation: In & Around the Geodesic Dome \n\n\n\nMoss Webster is leading a group workshop inside and around the geodesic dome to turn locally foraged mosses\, lichens\, and plants into small living artworks held inside frames. It is quiet\, tactile\, and deeply satisfying work. You will walk away with something you made by hand from materials gathered right here on the coast\, and a closer eye for the tiny ecosystems growing at your feet. \n\n\n\nPOD 3: Nature Printing\n\n\n\nHost: DIY Station (Available All Day) \n\n\n\nLocation: Beside Barn on Picnic Tables \n\n\n\nOut on the picnic tables beside the barn\, we will have a DIY station running all day for hand-dyeing fabric with foraged plants. The trick is delightfully simple: arrange your plants\, fold the fabric\, and beat it with a rubber mallet until the pigments print straight into the cloth. Fabric markers will be on hand if you want to push your piece further. Drop in whenever the mood strikes. \n\n\n\nPOD 4: Wildkin Face Mask Making\n\n\n\nHost: DIY Station (Available All Day) \n\n\n\nLocation: Tables & Chairs Area in Main Room \n\n\n\nIf you have seen our critter masks at productions and protests\, this is your chance to make your own. The main room will have a DIY station stocked with base masks\, decorating materials\, and a few of our wildkin photos on display for inspiration. Build whatever creature is calling you. Wear it home\, wear it to the next rally\, wear it around the fire that night. \n\n\n\nPOD 5: ECC Environmental Action\n\n\n\nHost: Information Station (Available All Day) \n\n\n\nLocation: Front Entrance \n\n\n\nStop by the front entrance to see the full picture of what ECC and CRA are working on to protect local ecosystems. We will have a large display\, brochures\, handouts\, maps of threatened areas\, and volunteers ready to talk through any of it with you. Whether you are brand new to this work or already deep in it\, come find out where your time\, skills\, and voice can plug in.
