It is a living\, breathing place where old-growth forests\, coastal estuaries\, salmon runs\, and the quiet rhythms of tide and fog hold each other up in ways most people never get to see. That web is under constant pressure. Clearcuts creep closer to the shoreline. Aerial herbicide spraying drifts into watersheds. Plastics wash in with every swell. Development fragments habitat that keystone species depend on. The threats do not arrive one at a time and then leave. They arrive together\, and they keep coming. \n\n\n\nThe Wildkin Festival is our answer to that relentlessness. It is a day to step away from the feed\, put your hands into real materials\, and remember that this place is worth fighting for because it is worth loving first. We are gathering at Heart Barn on June 27th from noon to 6pm to craft\, eat\, learn\, and be in the same room together\, followed by a potluck and fireside chat for anyone who wants to keep the evening going under the stars. \n\n\n\nProtecting an ecosystem takes more than petitions and public comments\, though we will keep doing both. It takes a community that actually knows each other. It takes neighbors who have shared a meal\, stamped leaves onto fabric together\, shaped moss into something beautiful\, and laughed while creating a critter mask. Those tangible\, in-person connections are what carry us when the next timber sale gets announced\, the next spray plan hits the news\, or the next legislative session opens with bad bills on the docket. \n\n\n\nEvery pod at this festival is designed to be hands-on and welcoming\, whether you come for an hour or stay the whole day. You can sample sourdough and take home a starter\, make moss art inside frames with locally foraged materials\, dye fabric with plants and rubber mallets\, build your own Wildkin face mask inspired by our puppet creations\, or sit down with volunteers to learn how ECC and CRA are working to defend this coast. \n\n\n\nCome ready to make something. Come ready to meet people. Stay as long as you want\, ask every question you have been sitting on\, and leave with a living culture and enough confidence to actually care for and bake with it. \n\n\n\nPOD 2: Moss Art\n\n\n\nHost: Moss Webster \n\n\n\nLocation: In & Around the Geodesic Dome \n\n\n\nMoss Webster is leading a group workshop inside and around the geodesic dome to turn locally foraged mosses\, lichens\, and plants into small living artworks held inside frames. It is quiet\, tactile\, and deeply satisfying work. You will walk away with something you made by hand from materials gathered right here on the coast\, and a closer eye for the tiny ecosystems growing at your feet. \n\n\n\nPOD 3: Nature Printing\n\n\n\nHost: DIY Station (Available All Day) \n\n\n\nLocation: Beside Barn on Picnic Tables \n\n\n\nOut on the picnic tables beside the barn\, we will have a DIY station running all day for hand-dyeing fabric with foraged plants. The trick is delightfully simple: arrange your plants\, fold the fabric\, and beat it with a rubber mallet until the pigments print straight into the cloth. Fabric markers will be on hand if you want to push your piece further. Drop in whenever the mood strikes. \n\n\n\nPOD 4: Wildkin Face Mask Making\n\n\n\nHost: DIY Station (Available All Day) \n\n\n\nLocation: Tables & Chairs Area in Main Room \n\n\n\nIf you have seen our critter masks at productions and protests\, this is your chance to make your own. This month Rachel will guide us through the simple and intuitive process of landscape watercolor\, exploring value and depth\, to create a painting of our beautiful coast range mountains. \n\n\n\nStarting with white paper and working with diluted indigo and black paint\, we will begin with the sky\, and work through each layer of the mountains\, color darkening as they get closer to us. We will finish with a painting of our beautiful coastal mountain range. \n\n\n\nNo experience needed. Reserving a seat tells us how much paper and paste to buy\, so early sign-ups genuinely help.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote that this gathering runs three hours instead of our usual two\, from 5 to 8 pm. Paper and paste need time to dry\, and we would rather not rush the good part. \n\n\n\nFall is about to turn on the coast. This month Moss Webster shows us how to catch some of that and light it from the inside\, building paper lanterns with leaves and fronds pressed into the paper so they read as silhouettes when the light comes on. \n\n\n\nYou can make a single lantern to set on a table with an LED tea light inside\, or make a few and hang them on a string. Moss is partial to Japanese maple and ferns\, but there is no wrong answer here. Flower petals with strong color often show through beautifully\, so bring those too if you have them. \n\n\n\nMoss will be out foraging before the gathering and bringing a stash to share. That said\, keep an eye out on your own walks this week. A leaf you picked up yourself is a better lantern than one from the pile. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring\n\n\n\n\nLeaves\, fern fronds\, flower petals\, seed heads\, anything flat with a good outline. Fresh is fine.\n\n\n\nA hair dryer\, if you have one you can carry. They speed up drying considerably and we will share them around the room.\n\n\n\nIf you want to hang your lanterns on a string\, bring your own LED string lights. Buy them ahead of time. LED only\, because paper lanterns and hot bulbs do not belong in the same sentence. Bulbs with a clear casing around them\, the round globe style\, spread the light through a lantern far better than a bare bulb does.\n\n\n\n\nWhat we provide\n\n\n\nPaper\, paste\, forms\, and all the tools. We are also supplying LED tea light candles for anyone making individual lanterns\, so you can take yours home lit. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Moss Webster\n\n \nMoss has been a Coastal resident for about 10 years.
