March Craft & Chat: Sgraffito Pottery

Last week, at our monthly gathering at the South Beach Community Center, Liz Fox and Beth Kattleman guided us through the art of sgraffito, an Italian word meaning “to scratch,” a centuries-old pottery decorating technique that produces stunning results through a surprisingly meditative process.

Sgraffito works by applying a layer of colored slip to leather-hard clay, then carefully scratching away parts of that layer to reveal the clay beneath, creating contrasting images, patterns, and texture. In this workshop, we carved through black slip to reveal the white clay underneath, so your carved lines contrast against a dark background. As you can see below, there was some amazing sgraffito art rendered by some talented folks!

Thank you again to everyone who made this evening possible, and for being a part of this journey! We look forward to continuing to grow this community of co-creating joy, hope and action through art together. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us for this special evening and can’t wait to see you at our next monthly gathering in April.

If you missed this one, stay tuned—there’s always room at the table for new creative voices in our community!
